The Benefice forms part of Grantham Deanery within the Archdeaconry of Boston and the Diocese of Lincoln.

The Person we are looking for:-

Qualifications / Training

  • Ordained priest within the Church of England, or a Church in communion with it, or a Church whose Orders it recognises.
  • Willingness to engage in further training that enhances the skills of community leadership.



  • Engagement with and pastoral support for people of all ages.
  • Leading a range of worship styles.
  • Working with PCCs and Treasurers in developing the financial stability of both parishes.


  • Oversight, together with the PCC’s of the care, maintenance and development of buildings.
  • Experience of worship in creative, engaging and imaginative ways.

Knowledge/Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to preach well, reaching a broad range of listeners with varying outlooks and ages.
  • Ability to engage with children, helping them to develop their own spiritual journeys.
  • The ability to identify and respond to opportunities for mission.
  • A desire to make and build on links with individuals and community organisations whose involvement with the Church is limited.
  • Leadership skills including the ability to motivate, inspire and coordinate volunteers effectively.

General Attributes

  • Able to work in sympathy with the central churchmanship of the parishes within the benefice.
  • Evidence of a deep prayer life and a spirituality nourished and sustained through robust patterns of prayer, study and retreats.
  • An ecumenical outlook and willingness to work with other local churches.

  • A natural ability to relate comfortably to everyone, whatever their age and social background;
  • A gift for preaching and teaching, with a love for the Bible and a desire to help others to love it too and to apply its teaching in their lives;
  • A heart for worship, and confidence and sensitivity in leading people into the presence of God, using both traditional and contemporary styles of worship;
  • A collaborative leader, committed to discovering and encouraging people’s gifts and ministries and to training people to use their gifts well.

What support can we offer our new vicar?

  • The Church of the Ascension has one Warden and a PCC and Londonthorpe has two wardens and a PCC;
  • A ministry team of one Ordained Local Minister, an Authorised Lay Minister and an OLM Ordinand;
  • A modern vicarage in the heart of Harrowby parish:

The four bedroomed Vicarage is on Edinburgh Road next to the Church of the Ascension and is of mid 50’s brick construction, comprising a lounge, large kitchen/diner, study and downstairs cloakroom. Stairs to the first floor lead to 4 bedrooms and a family bathroom with shower. The home benefits from Gas central heating and UPVC double-glazing throughout. A large garden surrounds the property with a drive and large garage. The rear garden is secluded and has a secure back gate with fencing to three sides. The Vicarage is situated adjacent to the church car park and church hall building.

The United Benefice of The Church of the Ascension, Harrowby and Saint John the Baptist, Londonthorpe lay on the north east side of the ancient market town of Grantham, in south-west Lincolnshire. The historic market town of Grantham lies on the Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire county borders. The town has many local attractions and amenities and the River Witham forms a green corridor through the centre.
