St Luke’s is a spiritual community with a holistic outlook, an open theology, a social conscience and an eclectic liturgy.
Serving an area where the super rich live alongside the very poor, this creative and inclusive church is looking for a vicar who can help us imaginatively engage with our local parish in ordinary everyday practice.
We’re looking for someone comfortable with lay participation and open to a diversity of perspective, a team player who can help us look after each other – and look out to our wider neighbourhood.
St Luke’s looks a lot like a traditional anglican church in lots of ways, but that’s definitely not the whole story. We use liturgy and traditions that we’ve borrowed and adapted from all sorts of places and all sorts of times, but shaped and energised by being grounded in the present. We believe in God’s love for each and every one of us. We embrace difference, and the only thing we are fundamental about is our belief that everyone should be made welcome for communion; wherever they are on their journey of faith or doubt.

We try to be generous and engaged, distinctive but not arrogant, learning and journeying together – a place where those who can, do; and those who can’t are carried.
Roughly 120 people attend our main Sunday morning service, and we have about 250 people on our electoral roll, with the same number receiving our weekly notices. We have a pretty good age range represented in the congregation, but we’re aware that many young families in particular get pushed out of the area by the high cost of housing. We love the diversity of the parish, and know that we don’t fully reflect it in our congregation. Many travel from outside of the parish to come to our Sunday services.
On a good day we are welcoming, non-judgemental, inclusive, fun, friendly and relevant.

Above all we value the welcome that is given to everyone who walks through the door. We embrace diversity, celebrate creativity and feel angry about injustice.
We like doubt and honesty.
What do we want to do differently?
There’s a lot of things on our minds such as:
● We want to be sure that we are welcoming and take care of people who come to St Luke’s. We have a fluid congregation: lots of people come to St Luke’s on a regular irregular basis – we want to make sure that they don’t slip through the cracks, especially as we don’t have weekly home-groups or a big pastoral team.
● We care about our local community. We can’t help wondering what more we could for the 13,000 people in our Parish.
● We are good at ideas and sometimes not so good at making things happen. We’d like more resource and we’d like it not always to be the same people doing things. We’re sure we’ve got potential to be more and do more. We just need a little help unlocking it.
