The Diocese of Chichester is looking for a self-motivated, energetic and organised individual to assist the Director in promoting the policies of the statutory Diocesan Board of Education in Church of England schools by providing advice and support to head teachers, staff, governors of and clergy working within these schools. This will relate to overall educational standards and pupil outcomes, Religious Education, Collective Worship and the distinctive character of Church schools across the diocese.

You will be responsible for advising governors and head teachers on the development of the distinctive Christian character and the promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development in the life of their schools. To oversee, commission and lead Religious Education support and manage arrangements for the denominational inspection of C of E schools.

To assist the Director in promoting the policies of the statutory Diocesan Board of Education in Church of England schools by providing advice and support to headteachers, staff, governors of and clergy working within these schools. This will relate specifically to the Admissions Code of Practice and issues related to compliance and governance as referred by the Governor Development Officer

This post holder will liaise nationally and advise locally on issues related to admissions

  • To oversee, commission and lead support related to admissions, as necessary, in liaison with the relevant Local Authority (LA) and the Department for Education (DfE), for each Church school in need of advice on the Admissions Code of Practice.
  • To advise governors and head teachers on administering their process of Admissions and dealing with complex issues and appeals.
  • To advise governors and headteachers on issues of Compliance and Governance as requested by the Governor Development Officer
  • To identify Church school training needs by evaluating the impact of past professional development activities; contribute to the annual training programme for Church and community schools; and to lead courses that take full account of school needs in relation to Admissions both nationally and locally.
  • As an officer of the Board of Education, to be responsible with the Director of Education for the implementation of the policies of the Board and the work of its sub groups.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be required by the Director of Education and to work at all times in close partnership with all other members of the Schools Team and other Church House Departments.

The post holder will be a qualified and highly skilled leader with management experience able to demonstrate:

  • A strong personal commitment to the Church's mission and a clear understanding and vision about the central role of Church schools in serving local children and families.
  • A commitment to embedding the Church of England Vision for Education in our diocesan schools.
  • The necessary interpersonal skills for the establishment of good relationships with head teachers, governors, clergy, local authority officers, DCAT and Church House staff.
  • Successful experience of securing rapid and lasting improvement in schools
  • Knowledge and experience of working with the admissions process in Church of England Schools. Strong experience in this field is essential.
  • Appropriate senior leadership experience within schools and/or school improvement services.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to articulate a vision for rounded academic and personal outcomes for pupils through a distinctively Christian education.
  • The ability to analyse policies, information and data and to present clearly the key points from documentation.
  • High level and up to date IT skills.
  • To be self-motivated with a strong work ethic having the ability to work creatively and determinedly on his/her own initiative.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, risks and opportunities.

The Diocese of Chichester is the Church of England in Sussex. It almost exactly covers the counties of East and West Sussex and the City of Brighton and Hove, stretching for nearly a hundred miles (160km) along the south coast of England. The Diocese of Chichester Board of Education (DBE) is to oversee the work of all Church of England state funded schools in the Diocese. Currently there are 158 Church of England schools in the diocese – 60 have voluntary aided status and 98 have voluntary controlled status. Of these seven are church secondary schools and there are nine academies. Educating C37,000 pupils and have extended contact with their families, a demographic that is often missing.
