The Central Secretariat services the institutional and governance role of the Church of England. The main bodies it services are the Archbishops’ Council, the General Synod, its three Houses and other Synodical bodies.
The General Synod of the Church of England is the legislative body of the Church of England, made up of three houses – The House of Bishops, Clergy and Laity. The legislation it passes becomes part of UK law and is subject to Parliamentary Approval and Royal Assent. The Business Committee plans the Agenda and oversees the organisation of General Synod meetings. The Appointments Committee makes appointments and recommendations for appointments to synodical and other bodies as required by the Synod or the Archbishops’ Council.
The Archbishops’ Council provides within the Church of England, a focus for leadership and executive responsibility and a forum for strategic thinking and planning. It oversees the Archbishops’ Renewal and Reform initiative.
As Executive Officer in the Synod Office, you will provide administrative support to the Director of Central Secretariat and the Boards and Committees serviced by the Director and her team.
A key part of this role will involve acting as Assistant Secretary to the General Synod Business committee which is serviced by the Director of Central Secretariat in her role as Clerk.
As a member of the General Synod support team prior to and during General Synod meetings, your role will be interesting and varied and will include assembling documents and material, logistical arrangements, processing ‘Requests to Speak’ and maintenance of the General Synod website.
With previous office experience and a friendly, approachable and efficient manner, you will have the confidence to communicate with people at all levels, dealing appropriately with confidential matters and sensitive issues.
Competent in the use of IT with a comprehensive knowledge of systems and processes, your attention to detail and ability to prioritise will ensure that you are well organised, completing tasks accurately and on time.
