An exciting opportunity has arisen following the creation of the new Benefice of Soberton, Newtown and Hambledon for a new spiritual leader to guide us as we seek new ways to share workloads, make connections and engage with our congregations, communities and children and help us to shape our future together.

The Bishop of Portsmouth seeks a Priest in Charge of the new Benefice of Soberton, Newtown and Hambledon.

The Vicarage in Hambledon will be the home of the Priest-in-Charge of our three rural village communities located in the South Downs National Park. Within easy driving distance are the cities of Portsmouth, Winchester, Southampton and Chichester

Please read the attached Parish Profile for full details of who we are and what we are seeking to achieve together.

Further information about the parishes are available on the websites at www.sobertonchurch.org.uk, www.hambledonchurch.co.uk

Our Priest-in-Charge will

  • be our spiritual leader
  • guide and nurture our three parishes of central churchmanship as we seek to grow and develop as a single benefice, whilst respecting our individual and unique identities.

Our Priest-in-Charge will be someone

  • with proven missional leadership skills.
  • who is equally able to engage with children, young adults, those in and out of work and older people at home, school, workplace and in the community.
  • who will inspire and lead us as we work together.

Please refer to the person specification in the Parish Profile for fuller details.

Our diocese is made up of 11,000 or so worshippers in 139 Church of England parishes across south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It is led by our Bishop, and includes clergy, Readers, retired clergy, chaplains, paid staff and thousands of volunteers who work in our parishes.

Our diocese is also divided into seven deaneries, each of which co-ordinates the mission and ministry of parishes in their area.

Further information about the diocese can be found at : www.portsmouth.anglican.org

We have a framework to envision our diocese in the future - and it can be summed up in just three words:

live | pray | serve will be our guide for the future, as we seek to equip people to live as disciples of Christ; to pray, individually and together as worshipping communities; and to serve our local neighbourhoods and society together.

To achieve this, we will encourage and support our parishes, chaplaincies and church schools as they aim to:

  • make disciples of Christ;
  • grow our churches;
  • equip people for lifelong learning; and
  • promote the transformation of society.

These four strands embrace all the work covered by our central diocesan teams, but are also picked up through engagement with individual worshippers and in local parishes, communities, chaplaincies, and schools.
