The Church of England Record Centre (CERC) holds the archives of a variety of historical central Church of England bodies, which document the evolving organisation and activities of the Church of England since 1704. CERC also provides a records management service to the National Church Institutions (NCIs) and advice to the wider church.

Lambeth Palace Library is the historic library and record office of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the principal repository of the documentary history of the Church of England. Its collections have been freely available for research since 1610.

In 2020, CERC’s archive service will amalgamate with Lambeth Palace Library in a new, purpose-built Library.

As Record Centre and Library Assistant working at both the Church of England Records Centre and Lambeth Palace, you will provide a high standard of service to our customers.

Your role will be varied and interesting and will include answering enquiries, responding to requests for files and deeds, cataloguing and classifying printed material and contributing to the continuous improvement of our systems and processes.

Competent in the use of IT and MS Office you will have good administrative skills and a positive and proactive approach, working flexibly to deliver both quality standards and service requirements.

  • Contributing ideas, suggestions and experience in the pursuit of increasing the efficiency of processes and/or improving the Record Centre and Lambeth Palace Library services. Actively liaising with customers to seek feedback about the CERC/LPL service.
  • Retrieving, issuing, tracking and returning files and deeds at CERC in response to loan requests from internal customers to Service Level Agreement deadlines. (“live desk”)
  • Answering archival enquiries relating to material at CERC and developing increasing knowledge of the collections to facilitate this
  • Cataloguing and classifying printed material.
  • Assisting in the running and invigilation of the Reading Room at both locations by admitting readers, producing material for readers and other related duties including evening shifts on a rota basis at Lambeth Palace Library.
  • Maintaining the CERC files (including relocating, sorting, cleaning, boxing, stock-taking). This work will involve climbing ladders and getting dusty. Ladders and overalls will be provided.
  • Implementing the agreed quality control mechanisms and updating the relevant computerised (or manual) records systems across all types of work.
  • Developing a working knowledge of the CERC & LPL collections, archival and current.
  • Any other duties that may be reasonably required from time to time.

Essential :


  • Good IT skills, including accurate keyboard skills and familiarity with databases.
  • Excellent grasp of written English.
  • Good clerical and administration skills.
  • Organised, tidy and methodical in day-to-day duties.


  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven experience of a customer focussed working environment.
  • Ability to follow processes and to contribute recommendations for improvements.
  • Ability to write good quality correspondence to customers.


  • Good general education, including English GCSE or equivalent.

  • Prepared to commute to Bermondsey and Lambeth.



  • Able and willing to work with a variety of software packages with minimal support.


  • Experience of working in a Record Centre, Archive or Library environment.
  • Previous experience of Calm for either records management or Archives and/or a Library Management System
  • Some knowledge of cataloguing standards
