The Church of England Record Centre (CERC) holds the archives of a variety of historical central Church of England bodies, which document the evolving organisation and activities of the Church of England since 1704. CERC also provides a records management service to the National Church Institutions (NCIs) and advice to the wider church.

In 2020, CERC’s archive service will amalgamate with Lambeth Palace Library in a new, purpose-built Library.

As Record Centre Assistant, you will be based at the Church of England Records Centre in Bermondsey, providing a high standard of service to our customers.

Your role will involve responding to requests for files and deeds and maintaining the Record Centre by relocating, sorting and boxing files as required.

Working flexibly as part of our busy team, you will assist with the data entry of archival records and the running of the Reading Room by admitting and assisting readers.

  • Contributing ideas, suggestions and experience in the pursuit of increasing the efficiency of processes and/or improving the Record Centre services. Actively liaising with customers to seek feedback about the CERC service.
  • Retrieving, issuing, tracking and returning files and deeds at CERC in response to loan requests from internal customers to Service Level Agreement deadlines. (“live desk”)
  • Answering enquiries from customers, including other departments, diocesan officials, their professional advisers and the public concerning the collections at CERC and advising on sources elsewhere.
  • Receiving, checking, accessioning and depositing files, deeds, meeting papers, publications and Pastoral Re-Organisation schemes including necessary data entry, amendments and filing.
  • Assisting in the running and invigilation of the Reading Room by admitting readers, producing material for readers and other related duties.
  • Handing away or destroying archives, records and deeds as required.
  • Maintaining the Record Centre files (including relocating, sorting, cleaning, boxing, stock-taking). This work will involve climbing ladders and getting dusty. Ladders and overalls will be provided.
  • Data entry of archival records onto current records management and archival databases.
  • Assisting with any backlog that may build up from time to time.
  • Implementing the agreed quality control mechanisms and updating the relevant computerised (or manual) records systems across all types of work.
  • Developing a working knowledge of the CERC collections, archival and current.



  • Good IT skills, including accurate keyboard skills and familiarity with databases.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Clerical and administration skills.
  • Organised and methodical in day-to-day duties.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision (once processes and procedures have been learnt).


  • Competent user of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven experience of a customer focussed working environment.
  • Ability to follow processes and to contribute recommendations for improvements.
  • Ability to write a good standard of correspondence to customers.


  • Educated to GCSE (including English) standard or equivalent

  • Able and willing to work with a variety of software packages with minimal support.


  • Experience of working in a Record Centre or Archive environment.
  • Previous experience of Calm for either records management or Archives Experience of deeds research in a records office, or registry.
