Vicar of St John’s, Belmont
We are looking for an energetic Vicar to develop the real potential for both spiritual and numerical growth at St John’s.
The Parish of Belmont
Belmont parish, with a population of about 6000, sits at the border between the London Borough of Sutton and Surrey. It enjoys the best of both worlds with easy rail access to London and proximity to attractive Surrey countryside. Although suburban, Belmont has the ambience of a village, with St John’s a key feature. Sutton schools are sought-after. Belmont has a large primary school, a new secondary school and also an independent primary, just outside the parish.
The Anglican/Methodist Local Ecumenical Partnership
Since the mid 1980s, the union between local Anglicans and Methodists has happily developed to the present position whereby constitutionally both have merged to become a “Church of England & Methodist Church”. After closure of the Methodist Church, worship is in St John’s with a single congregation committed to sharing the best of both traditions. Governance is by an ECC (Ecumenical Church Council) covering finance, organisation, management and decision taking.
Summary of our Mission Action Plan (MAP)
Our new MAP is supported by the congregation and sets out the needs and expectations of the parish for the future, as well as demonstrating that our church is committed to and working towards developing and growing our parish.
It includes a detailed consideration of our strengths and weaknesses as well as the many opportunities available to us.
Our Vision for the future is to become a vibrant Church, with a growing, friendly, mixed-age congregation, sharing our faith with the local community in practical ways. Ways in which we are actively working to achieve this are:
What we are looking for in our new Vicar
St John’s has an ageing congregation with the need to introduce younger families as church members. There is good scope to do so. However, this is so important and crucial to the future well-being and growth of the parish that the new Vicar must expect to spend 40-50% of his/her time on this work.
As well as welcoming applications from experienced clergy, consideration will be given to those for whom this will be a first or second appointment after the end of Curacy. We would welcome applications from either male or female clergy.
We are looking for a leader with the energy, drive and enthusiasm to:
