Bath, Swainswick and Woolley
St Saviour’s parish (pop. 6,700) lies on the north-east edge of Bath, centred on the originalvillage of Larkhall, whose residents have a strong sense of local identity, and run an annual Arts festival. Most of the shops in the centre of Larkhall are independently run; other local facilities include a theatre, vehicle repair garages, pubs and beautiful parks. Larkhall URC has a place of worship and meeting rooms in St Saviour’s parish.
Swainswick with Woolley parish (pop. 1,200) includes Swainswick village, with its ancientchurch and school, nestled in the lee of Little Solsbury Hill – site of an Iron Age fort.‘Swainswick Explorers’ is a children’s after-school and holiday club based in Swainswick. Across the valley is Woolley, a hamlet mentioned in the Domesday book and known as a ‘Doubly Thankful’ village. The church there was designed by John Wood, a notable character in the development of Georgian Bath.
We are ‘two parishes, three churches, two congregations’. Our church in Larkhall, Bath is evangelical and the two beautiful small village churches in the adjacent southern Cotswold valley are more traditional. We are all open to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
We would like to grow in number and maturity, develop our prayer life, strengthen links in the community, and share the good news of Jesus outside church, serving with love.
- To share with the Bishop of Bath & Wells and the Bishop of Taunton in the cure of souls in the parish(es).
- To be the minister of the parish/benefice, having regard to the calling and responsibilities of the clergy of the Church of England as described in the Ordinal, the Canons, national and local safeguarding policies, the Diocesan Guidelines for Clergy and all other relevant legislation, in accordance with the Archbishops’ statement Guidelines for the Professional Conduct of the Clergy.
- To work with any other ministers in the parish/benefice, members of the Parochial Church Council and key lay leaders in the development of the church in the parish/benefice, having regard to the need for sustainability and effectiveness in mission.
- To release the energy and gifts of the whole people of God.
- To ensure that a high standard of worship, preaching and pastoral care is provided.
- To be ready and willing to re-imagine ministry and mission with the recognition that some initiatives may not always bear fruit.
- To contribute, where appropriate, to the life of the wider church (possibly at a deanery, diocesan or national level) and community.
We are looking for someone who is after God’s own heart, a harvester: a leader offering bible-based teaching, who will encourage us to use our gifts. We would like someone to help us develop ministries that encourage new people to Christian faith; someone who will inspire, motivate, challenge, and empower church members to achieve our vision. Specifically:
Worship, Teaching and Preaching
- Preaching the gospel in a way that will encourage faith development, adapting content and style for different purposes and levels of faith or knowledge.
- Leading worship that gives glory to God.
Personal Development and Spirituality
- Developing personal skills and knowledge in relation to ministry through reading, study/training courses, workshops.
- Strong in Spiritual Disciplines
- Recognising the life journey of developing theological understanding and spiritual reflection, and explaining it clearly to others.
- Taking a weekly day off and the full holiday entitlement, allowing adequate time for personal relationships, health and recreation.
- Demonstrating active listening and empathetic behaviour.
- Being a model of the love of God in action.
- An encourager for the existing members of the church family.
Leadership and Working Collaboratively
- Inspiring, motivating, challenging and empowering members of the church, individually and collectively, to achieve the vision.
- Sharing ministry as appropriate and working collaboratively with others, so that individual gifts and talents are identified and used effectively.
- Building up the pastoral care and other teams.
- Strategic planning to translate the vision into short, medium and long-term planning.
Mission and Outreach
- Using creative ways of reaching the unchurched.
- Developing a ministry that encourages new people to Christian faith
- Developing relations with community and external organisations to promote positive links with the church.
