We are looking for someone with vision and experience to lead strategic change for mission, share in teaching and pastoral care, inspire collaboration in ministry and implement our diocesan strategy.

Our new Archdeacon of Portsdown will encourage and support our churches grow in depth, impact and number working in collaboration with the Bishop and senior colleagues committed to delivering our live | pray | serve strategy .

Within our live | pray | serve strategy the diocese is seeking to equip people to live as disciples of Christ; to pray, individually and together as worshipping communities; and to serve our local neighbourhoods and society together. This strategy has informed a renewed drive to find fresh ways of reaching out enabling pastoral reorganisation and creating new worshipping communities.

  • As a key leader in pastoral care the Archdeacon will be generous in service and lead strategic change for mission and outreach in the diocese.
  • The Archdeacon will implement and deliver the vision for our diocese as part of the diocesan team working closely with the Bishop and senior colleagues.
  • The Archdeacon will inspire and encourage lay and ordained to be ministers of God's graceworking with the clergy, churchwardens and parish communities for the practical service of the local area.

  • As an articulate and practical theologian the Archdeacon will be committed to the ministry of all people, lay and ordained.
  • With evidence of leading collaborative working and mission initiative the Archdeacon will be confident in wider community-building engagement.
  • The Archdeacon will be gifted in nurturing, supporting and leading individuals and groups in a variety of settings.

Our diocese is made up of 11,000 or so worshippers in 139 Church of England parishes across south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It is led by our Bishop, and includes clergy, readers, retired clergy, chaplains, paid staff and thousands of volunteers who work in our parishes.

Our diocese is divided into seven deaneries with the deaneries of Havant and Portsmouth making up the Archdeaconry of Portsdown.
