This large, urban benefice is seeking a priest in the Catholic tradition who will develop the gifts and confidence of laypeople and bring freshness and energy to the ministry of three parishes serving the town of Accrington. An expertise in ministry to schools is essential and the successful candidate will be unafraid of hard work, committed to the life of prayer and will show compassion and diligence as a pastor. The PCCs have passed resolutions under the House of Bishop’s Declaration and pastoral care is delegated to the Bishop of Burnley.

The successful candidate will:

  • Maintain the Catholic and Eucharistic traditions of the parishes but bring a freshness of approach to worship and preaching.
  • Develop the confidence and prayer life of laypeople across three congregations so that they feel better equipped to live out their faith in their daily lives.
  • Work with the PCCs to implement strategies that will enable growth in numbers and in depth of faith in line with Vision 2026.
  • Minister closely to three strong Church of England Primary schools and play a full part as one of a team of Chaplains at St Christopher’s Secondary School (which is in the Parish).
  • Support Friday Praise (a new congregation meeting in one of the schools) and seek to develop similar ways of connecting with new families.
  • Foster and develop friendships with the large Muslim population in the benefice
  • Pay close attention to the administrative and financial health of the benefice

The Benefice seeks a priest who:

  • Has a strong and disciplined life of prayer and will seek ways to draw others into prayer
  • Can articulate a Catholic vision of evangelism and church growth
  • Enjoys working with children and young people and is happy in the school environment
  • Is willing to build partnerships and relationships with different groups across a large and diverse parish
  • Is good at setting priorities and boundaries and is strategic about which areas of ministry to focus on and which to lay aside
  • Can unlock gifts and potential in others and is able to build up the confidence of laypeople to develop areas of ministry
  • Is willing to play a full part in the life of the Deanery and Diocese
