The CCU staff team has a key role in supporting the work of CCU and of the Faith and Order Commission. CCU is an advisory committee of the General Synod and reports to the Synod through the Archbishops’ Council, which oversees the ecumenical relations of the Church of England. A number of ecumenical Committees, Panels, Commissions etc. are an integral part of those relations and the team provides staffing and support for them, including those that sustain formal agreements with other Churches in Europe, i.e. the Porvoo, Meissen and Reuilly agreements. FAOC is a commission of the General Synod and advises the Church of England on theological matters, including those arising from ecumenical engagement. The team also has a role in supporting the ecumenical work of the Archbishop of Canterbury and in advising the House of Bishops in relevant areas.

To provide effective day-to-day administration, policy support and co-ordination of the team’s work in ecumenical relations as overseen by the CCU, with particular attention to the various ecumenical bodies that are integral to that work.

Fixed term contract until December 2020 working 28 hours per week.

The main responsibilities for this role are;

  • Overseeing all planning and preparation for meetings of the CCU and associated groups staffed by the team’s executives, liaising closely with colleagues within the team and communicating directly with members of those bodies as appropriate, in particular their Chairs and Co-Secretaries.
  • Drafting reports and other documents needed for these meetings in cooperation with the team’s executives, preparing agendas, distributing papers, taking minutes and ensuring follow-up internally and with other churches.
  • Being present for these meetings as may be required (including those in Continental Europe), where present being the staff member responsible for taking and distributing accurate and useful minutes, for handling practical arrangements in cooperation with relevant counterparts from other churches and for ensuring members including Chairs from the Church of England have all relevant information and access to appropriate support.
  • Handling on-going communication with the CCU and associated groups, in consultation with other team members.
  • Assisting with the administration and some policy support for other meetings staffed by the team’s executives as required.
  • Coordinating public presentation of activities relating to the team’s areas of responsibility via e.g. relevant web pages on the Church of England site, social media and distribution of electronic and printed documents.
  • Researching and preparing material on a range of issues as requested by the Secretary to the CCU.
  • Assisting with general administrative tasks within the team as required and helping to provide cover for colleagues when needed.
  • Undertaking such other work within the Division as may reasonably be required

Skills/Aptitudes

  • Foster good working relationships with people at different levels within an organisation, as well as among stakeholders and other interest groups
  • Maintain good judgment and ability to prioritise when under pressure
  • Understand complex issues and communicate that understanding to others clearly and concisely
  • Fast, accurate and well-presented typing skills
  • Good IT skills, including ability to make excellent use of Microsoft Office programmes

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Record of providing effective administration, policy support and co-ordination for busy teams
  • Experience of managing networks of stakeholders and other interest groups
  • Experience of drawing on a range of sources in order to produce well-argued and well-structured documents that demonstrate depth of understanding
  • Familiarity with and interest in church life in the contemporary context

Desirable

Skills/Aptitudes:

  • IT skills relating to web design, social media and desk-top publishing
  • Linguistic skills and ability to communicate in at least one other European language, preferably including German

  • Knowledge of Christian theology
  • Experience of project management
  • Experience of ecumenical relations
  • Understanding of the working of the Church of England
