The Diocesan Director of Education will:

Lead the Board of Education in its responsibilities under the DME Measure 1991.

Provide leadership to the Diocesan Board of Education Team, taking the senior role in supporting church schools and representing the Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) both locally and nationally.

Implement our strategy for education, in support of excellence in our church schools and successfully lead the implementation of the Board of Education’s vision for education.

It is expected that the Diocesan Director of Education (DDE) will serve as a Director of the Diocesan Multi Academy Trust.

The Diocese of Carlisle represents the Church of England across the county of Cumbria.

Within the Diocese there are 275 parishes serving a population of around 500,000 in a County that includes; the lake District National Park, the City of Carlisle and its surrounding rural parishes, the Eden Valley, the West Cumbrian Coast and has a number of historic market towns.

The Church of England in Cumbria wants to appoint a Director for Education for the Diocese of Carlisle.

There are in excess of 100 schools in the County which are Church of England Schools with a large proportion of these, smaller schools and the incoming DDE will be expected to provide leadership in taking the vision forward.

To lead the education team, ensuring it operates effectively and maintains a supportive Christian ethos, managing the DBE resources including budget and people and oversight of DBE policy development.

To lead and direct the team ensuring that high quality support is delivered to Church Schools, including but not limited to; school liaison and school effectiveness, training and school governance, maintenance and development of school buildings.

To lead strategic development, including school organisational and development work and liaison with local network groups to support school effectiveness.

To encourage and support the development of local church strategies for welcome, worship and working with all schools in fulfilment of the mission of the church and to secure the sustainability of churches and schools in local communities.

To act as Secretary to the Diocesan Board of Education.

To represent the Diocesan Board of Education as and when required with key stakeholders locally and nationally and as a director of the Diocesan Board of Education Services Ltd

Educated to Degree level and ideally, with a Masters Degree in relevant area.

Experience: Primary of secondary education, proven line management, working in a governance body, budget management and led significant change in an organisation.

Knowledge and Skill: Ability to implement high-level vision through detailed strategy, awareness of Ofsted and SIAMS inspection processes, familiarity with current law, policy and trends with respect to education, including buildings and safeguarding practice.

Personal effectiveness: Ability to meet deadlines and targets, professional, approachable, trustworthy and inspires confidence and a visionary and strategic thinker.

Ability to: Work in a focussed and organised manner, as a team player and willing to undertake ‘hands-on’ tasks as well as direct a small team. Develop and nurture others and communicate credibly and effectively.

Willingness to work flexibly and to work some evenings and weekends (if required) and hold a full driving licence and with a car available for work related travel.

The Diocesan Board of Finance is a limited charitable company and provides the corporate, financial and administrative functions of the Diocese and is based in Church House, Penrith.

The Diocesan Board of Education has responsibility for over 100 schools across the County, representing around 30% of the schools in Cumbria. Our vision takes a national vision and focusses it into Cumbria and represents a significant amount of recent strategic work across the Diocese and with our partners. The incoming Diocesan Director of Education will therefore inherit a clear direction of travel.

As a DBE, we have been fully engaged in areas such as the Church of England Foundation for Education Leadership and also as a member of the DBE Services (North West Dioceses, with York) we fulfil a strategic role within the wider education context.

We offer a salary of £55,000 p.a. and a non-contributory pension arrangement. The successful applicant will require enhanced DBS clearance.
