Overview of Church of England Birmingham

Birmingham is the UK’s second city with the youngest urban population in one of the most lively and diverse regions. The Church of England Birmingham is one of the 41 dioceses of the Church of England. It covers an area of nearly 300 square miles and includes parishes in Birmingham and parts of Solihull, Sandwell, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Right at the heart of what we do there are over 187 churches and other worshipping communities with an average weekly attendance of 17,000. Our worshipping communities represent a wide scope of tradition, ethnicity, age and background.

It is a time of new opportunities and potential in the Church of England Birmingham as we seek to shape ministry for a changing church and world as part of our ‘Transforming Church’ vision, supported by our ambitious People & Places framework. As part of People & Places, we are looking to increase leadership development and growth. To support this, we need to increase our capacity to deliver safeguarding training.

To develop and deliver safeguarding training across Church of England Birmingham, in line with national policy and guidance. This role will focus on Basic Awareness and Foundation modules and also some specialist modules as these become available for roll out.

Main Responsibilities

Training

·Working with our Safeguarding Training & Development Officer, be responsible for the development, organisation and delivery of a programme of safeguarding awareness, foundation and specialist modules. The training will be delivered to a wide range of participants across Church of England Birmingham, including:

oThose in licensed ministry

oVolunteers and paid workers who work with children, young people or the vulnerable.

oParish safeguarding co-ordinators

oAny other person who has responsibility for policy and management of work with children, young people and the vulnerable (including churchwardens and PCC members).

·Ensure evaluation, review and monitoring of the training programmes.

·Remain up to date with the development of government policy, Church of England policy and good practice in relation to safeguarding training.

Enabling Deaneries

·Act as an enabler to help and equip new deaneries to build capacity to be able to provide local, low-level safeguarding training.

·Recruit and establish a network of volunteer deanery trainers to help deliver local training in their deanery.

Networking

·Build great working relationships with relevant teams in Church of England Birmingham such as Parish Mission Support, Communications, HR, T&D Support.

·Be a part of the national and regional network of diocesan safeguarding trainers

·Be a member of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel (also known as the Bishop’s Safeguarding Management Group)

The Ideal Candidate will have:

Essential

·Knowledge and experience of safeguarding

·Up to date knowledge of safeguarding guidance

·Proven experience of successfully developing and delivering training.

·Excellent interpersonal and communication skills-written, oral and presentational

·Good IT skills

·Great administration skills

·The ability to develop great working relationships and build networks

·The ability to maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and work sensitively with those affected by issues of safeguarding

·Theability to identify and challenge examples of poor safeguarding process

·The ability to travel around the diocese

·A willingness to work within the ethos and the aims of the Church of England

·A willingness to live out our values of: collaborative, supportive, generous, inspirational and committed to a common purpose.

The following would be advantageous

·Knowledge of the Church of England structures

·Knowledge of national church safeguarding policies

·A qualification in training

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

· The role reports to the Safeguarding Training & Development Officer

· This is a part-time post of 17.5 hours per week.

· This is a fixed-term role, initially funded for 3 years

· Salary £15,000

· Membership of the Church Worker’s Pension Scheme (12% employer contribution)

· 5 weeks holiday per year plus pro-rated Bank Holiday entitlement plus 3 additional Diocesan Discretionary Days

· The employer is the BDBF (Birmingham Diocesan Board of Finance)
