Holy Spirit Dovecot is in a parish five miles from Liverpool City Centre and close to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

We are seeking a talented priest who values the sacramental life while helping us develop more informal worship styles. Based in an outer estate of Liverpool you will be able to lead the congregation on our ongoing journey of spiritual development and missional service. You will have a good base from which to engage with the wider community, including local schools and community groups. You will have ideas about how the church can make a bigger difference through appropriate social action projects linked to local needs.

You will benefit from a recently refurbished 4 bedroom vicarage.

Closing date: 25th August 2019
Interviews: to be confirmed

Dovecot has a modest but committed congregation served by conscientious, experienced wardens and leadership team. It is not a rich parish in monetary terms, but has stable finances and makes its contribution to parish share in full. The congregation are active within the liturgy and use material from “Roots” to teach a growing group of younger people. Through the recent time of Interim ministry, we have been re-ignited in our vision for reaching out to the community both in our social action and also our use of social media and development of A Church Near You. The buildings date from the 1930s and the church has a good hall which is well used by the community. Dovecot area has a population of around 9600 with a good mixture of both privately owned and housing association homes. While it is in the highest 2% of deprivation, it has a settled community feel with several generations of families living in the area. All this gives a strong base for developing mission and ministry.

There are some local shopping amenities and large supermarkets nearby and good access routes to Liverpool City Centre. The area is also well located for visiting across the North West, the Lake District, North Wales and beyond.

The church is looking for a priest who will:

  • value the sacramental life and be comfortable with formal traditions, but also help develop more informal worship styles
  • look at how to discern ways to engage with the wider community
  • establish social action projects to serve local needs
  • uphold and develop links with schools and community organisations
  • inspire and empower people to use their gifts in the service of the church and community
  • use diocesan initiatives to encourage growth especially among young families.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • have strong leadership skills
  • be a good communicator
  • a great sense of humour
  • kind heartedness and honesty, being helpful and friendly
  • a God centred, bible based, spirit filled approach.

For many years we have been working to achieve growth in our diocese. We have used different ways to express this but the aim and direction of travel has remained the same – consistent with the whole of the Church of England. When Bishop Paul was installed he adopted our growth agenda refreshing it by saying ‘we are asking God for a bigger church so we can make a bigger difference; more people knowing Jesus more justice in the world’

This is how we express our mission.

We think we will achieve this mission if we have

100 new congregations
1,000 new leaders
10,000 disciples

to help us do this we are calling every worshipping Christian in our diocese to:

  • sign up to the Bishop of Liverpool’s Rule of Life which will encourage and support us to Read, Learn, Pray, Give, Serve, Tell
  • bring 1 friend into the regular worshipping and serving life of the church (bring one friend)
  • do 10 acts of service or find 10 new points of connection beyond the walls of the church (do ten things)
