Renewal & Reform is a programme of work designed to enable the Church of England to become once again a growing church for all people and for all places.

There are currently nine key workstreams. There is an agreed communications strategy for Renewal and Reform and a number of elements have been piloted in early 2019. With this learning we want to increase the reach of quality communications to church goers and those in leadership positions in churches and church structures.

This role will deliver the Renewal and Reform communications strategy across a range of audiences and channels.

Expect to develop and bring to life an ambitious communications strategy supporting Renewal and Reform and helping to share the stories we have to tell as we seek to be a growing church for all people and places.

As well as a strong track record in communications, you’ll bring to the role substantial experience of internal and external communications, including online and digital. Demonstrating a participative approach, you’ll work closely with our in-house communications team and develop innovative, targeted and relevant ways to help spread the word to our many internal and external audiences.

You’ll also be able to deliver creative solutions within limited budget and be comfortable working collaboratively with key internal and external partners.

This is a fixed term contract expected to last for 15 months (extension to 3 years possible).

The Role :

  • Own and deliver the Renewal and Reform communications strategy.
  • Lead on the delivery of our Renewal and Reform Changing Stories campaign – personal stories that show the on the ground impact of change. This work is managed by the Renewal and Reform intern, and uses contracted writers and photographers.
  • Manage a portfolio of communications work which includes specific campaign work (e.g. Everyday Faith), or strategies to engage particular segments of the church, (e.g. mid-sized churches or coastal parishes)
  • Work closely with our in-house media team to ensure that our stories and news reflect the changes and stories being delivered through Renewal and Reform and to proactively identify opportunities which the media team can develop and pitch to journalists.
  • Ensure that our internal news channels feature high quality content, writing and co-ordinating content, updating key stakeholders on Renewal and Reform and creating new channels where these add value.
  • Own the Renewal and Reform presentation and events collateral, developing high quality visual resources for use by senior leaders.
  • Explore and deliver content via a range of accessible channels – including digital, audio such as podcasts and written.
  • Evaluation of communications using qualitative and quantitative measures.
  • Own the Renewal and Reform content on the Church of England website.

The Requirements :

Essential

Skills/Aptitudes:

  • An active planner with the ability to create and manage communications plans
  • Outstanding writing skills and excellent proofreading and copy-editing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to write for web and print.
  • Good understanding of targeted messaging and audiences

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience in developing and delivering successful communication strategies
  • Significant communications experience across a wide range of channels (including digital, print and audio)
  • A track record of creating engaging, audience appropriate content
  • Experience in leading communications particularly in a church context
  • Understanding of the media.

Desirable

Skills/Aptitudes:

  • Excellent project management and organisational skills with proven ability to coordinate a number of projects and tasks with competing deadlines
  • Familiarity with the Church of England
  • Understanding of the working of the Church of England, including parishes/dioceses and national church relationships.
