Ryde, Isle of Wight
Clergy
Full stipend

The Bishop of Portsmouth is seeking to appoint a Priest-in-Charge for this parish at one of the Island's flagship civic churches for their work in their ministry, mission and outreach.

The parish of All Saints' (and St Michael's) is part of the Isle of Wight Deanery and Archdeaconry playing a full part in the life of the island and the wider Diocese of Portsmouth.

The church holds a prominent position in Ryde and is a focal point for visitors from near and far to attend services, concerts and civic events.

Situated just off England's South coast, the Isle of Wight is a popular holiday destination at any time of the year. Ryde is the largest town on the island and has excellent connections to Portsmouth, London and beyond. Tourism and a high number of residents of retirement age are key mission areas with the potential for outreach and growth. We are beginning to explore working together in clusters and striving to develop collaborative ministry across urban and rural parishes.

All Saints' Church Ryde has always held a major role in the town for special services, civic and festival events, weddings and baptisms. The church has strong links with Ryde (independent) school which is across the road.

A key aspect of All Saints' Church is its role as a place for worship, prayer and communion placing the "word" at the core of the Christian experience.

We are looking for a priest who, supported by the ministry team and a committed and prayerful congregation, can celebrate the church's traditional liturgy and respond to the spiritual needs of the congregation and community.

The main responsibilities will be:

  • to actively support the solid musical and choral tradition
  • foster and encourage the strong civic links with the local community
  • encourage the congregation in their striving to reach out to the young and old in this part of the island.

The ideal candidate will:

  • lead the committed and prayerful congregation in their Sunday services
  • continue the outreach to housebound people and care homes
  • support the close links to the local schools especially Ryde School
  • further the involvement of children and young families attending church.

Our diocese is made up of 11,000 or so worshippers in 139 Church of England parishes across south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It is led by our Bishop, and includes clergy, Readers, retired clergy, chaplains, paid staff and thousands of volunteers who work in our parishes.

Our diocese is also divided into seven deaneries, the Isle of Wight being one - each of which co-ordinates the mission and ministry of parishes in their area.

Further information about the diocese can be found at : www.portsmouth.anglican.org

We have a framework to envision our diocese in the future - and it can be summed up in just three words:

live | pray | serve

we seek to equip people to live as disciples of Christ; to pray, individually and together as worshipping communities; and to serve our local neighbourhoods and society together.

To achieve this, we will encourage and support our parishes, chaplaincies and church schools as they aim to:

  • make disciples of Christ;
  • grow our churches;
  • equip people for lifelong learning; and
  • promote the transformation of society.

These four strands embrace all the work covered by our central diocesan teams, but are also picked up through engagement with individual worshippers and in local parishes, communities, chaplaincies, and schools.

To discuss the post, please contact the Archdeacon, Ven Peter Leonard

Interviews will take place on Monday 22 July 2019.
