The Strategy and Development Unit has a unique role in providing consultancy support to bishops and senior leadership teams in the Church’s dioceses on their growth strategies, and in advising on and managing the distribution of around £50 million per annum of national funding.
This includes the Strategic Development Funding, a major grant-making programme to support diocesan growth projects. The Unit is playing a key supportive role in helping the Church of England renew and reform its mission and arrest its decline.
As Senior Strategy Consultant, you will take a key role in the Unit’s consultancy work, proactively engaging with bishops and their senior leadership teams to support and shape their strategy development and implementation.
You will make a significant impact in helping dioceses develop their Strategic Development Funding applications and then support these projects through implementation and subsequent evaluation, monitoring and shared learning.
To be successful, you will need significant experience of operating in a consultancy environment with multiple clients, the ability to think strategically and to lead by example, demonstrating drive and commitment to the priorities of the Church of England.

The Role :
Much of the Unit’s work is project-based. The actual work of the post-holder will vary over time in line with the Unit’s evolving objectives, but their duties and responsibilities will fall within the following broad headings:
Pro-actively engage and build relationships with senior diocesan leadership teams to support the development of their growth strategies, resource allocation plans and associated Strategic Development Funding applications:
Build and maintain close working relationships with bishops and their senior diocesan colleagues helping them develop their strategic plans and mission strategies in order to support the growth of the Church.
Support dioceses with their resource allocation planning to underpin the implementation of their strategies.
Help dioceses to develop their strategic delivery capacity and change management plans.
Advise bishops and senior diocesan staff on the development of their diocese’s Strategic Development Funding (SDF) applications (involving grants in excess of £1 million).
Support diocesan teams, programme managers and external consultants (where in place) in the development of successful Stage 1 and Stage 2 SDF project plans.
Support diocesan leadership teams in the implementation of their strategic SDF projects (once awarded) :
Provide post-award support to ensure that projects move smoothly from award into implementation (e.g. kick-off workshops, stakeholder analysis, risk and issue workshops).
Support bishops and their leadership teams in introducing appropriate programme and project governance that is aligned with their existing decision-making structures.
Advise bishops and senior diocesan staff on the delivery of their change programmes, attending programme boards and undertaking monitoring and evaluation on a regular basis.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the uses to which the Church Commissioners’ funds and other Church resources have been put.
Identify valuable insights and share these effectively with senior diocesan teams:
From the Strategic Development Funding programme and other sources identify what is working well in dioceses in terms of mission, growth and programme management.
Prepare information insights which are targeted, succinct and actionable by dioceses in delivering their existing programmes and in developing new ones.
Work with colleagues to communicate these learning points to bishops and senior diocesan staff across the Church.
The Requirements :
Significant experience of operating in a consultancy environment with multiple clients.
Excellent relationship management and communication skills (including experience of working with senior colleagues).
Ability to think strategically, and to see both the wider picture and attend to detail – including an ability to get to the root cause of issues.
A proven track record of delivering complex transformation programmes, aligning business strategy alongside people planning and a medium-term financial plan.
Knowledge of programme and project management from inception through to delivery.
Experience of monitoring and evaluating the impact of projects, programmes and other initiatives.
High intellectual capacity with strong analytical abilities, able to assimilate and analyse information quickly, identifying issues and priorities.
The ability to present work attractively, persuasively and accurately, both spoken and in writing.
An understanding of how to support the mission and ministry of the Church effectively and a passion for encouraging the growth of the Church.
An understanding of the structures and workings of the Church of England and an ability to work effectively within them.
Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure when required.
Highly pro-active, demonstrating resourcefulness and energy with a commitment to making a difference.
Ability to apply understanding, judgement, tact and discretion.
Ability to lead by example, demonstrating enthusiastic commitment to the priorities of the Church of England
Education to degree level or equivalent.
Willingness and ability to undertake frequent diocesan visits (including residential events) and work outside office hours (including evening and occasional weekend working).
