St Mary’s is a community of evangelical Christians comprising 245 adults and children, with a mix of liturgical, contemporary and fresh expression congregations.

It is an integral part of a Church of England funded national Mission initiative in the Avonside Mission Area, ‘ASMA’ in north Bristol.

St Mary’s is the only church of any denomination located in the parish of Stoke Bishop, on the northern side of the city of Bristol, with good road and rail links in all directions.

This is an attractive, largely conservation area, adjacent to the Bristol Downs. Stoke Bishop retains a village atmosphere, while being less than 4 miles from the city centre, it is surrounded by green spaces, and is a wonderful area to bring up a family.

The parish is predominantly residential with post-1930s, detached, semi-detached and large Victorian houses, these are often divided into flats and in addition there are some purpose built apartment blocks.

Culturally Stoke Bishop is not very diverse, with few people from ethnic minorities and a high proportion of professionals and families despite the high cost of housing.

St Mary’s church family enjoys the breadth of services currently offered regarding this as a strength, these services range from liturgically-structured and choir led at 9.00am, through a lively all-age family service at 10:30am with band led contemporary music, to a smaller, but growing, café style service at 6:30 which is attended by a growing number of adults and young people. On Thursday mornings there is a spoken service of Holy Communion, following the Book of Common Prayer which precedes a Parish lunch.

St Mary’s has a strong youth and children’s programme, with something for all, from tots to teens, both on Sundays and during the week, and a strong relationship with the local C of E Academy Primary School

St Mary’s is involved in a range of mission activities both locally further afield supporting several mission partners overseas and is increasingly focused on mission and outreach within ASMA.

Regular prayer takes place both in small groups and corporately, we have a strong programme of pastoral care, which we would like to maintain and develop.

Lead, manage and develop the clergy, staff, lay and volunteer teams, inspiring a deeper commitment to God’s mission in Stoke Bishop and the Avonside Mission Area (“ASMA”).

Work with the diocese to accomplish the Avonside Mission Area vision, building on the established coalition and collaboratively developing further outreach initiatives.

Uphold excellent teaching and Bible exposition, demonstrating strong belief in the authority of the bible to inspire church members to deepen their faith and apply it practically to their lives.

Embrace the breadth of worship styles which appeal to the whole church family, and oversee services which enable authentic worship.

Discern God’s purpose for St. Mary’s both locally and within ASMA and communicate this in a way that motivates church members and others to work towards its accomplishment.

Ensure efficient administration of all aspects of church life, working closely with the Leadership Team, PCC, estates, mission and safeguarding officers.

Develop and promote a church fit for purpose to serve its community in the 21st century and beyond.

Established leadership skills and experience of achieving church growth;

Someone who will thrive working collaboratively with a large staff and leadership team of both lay and ordained people to evolve vision, and develop, implement and review strategic initiatives which deepen discipleship and promote effective outreach;

An excellent communicator in a wide range of contexts;

The ability to motivate, encourage and empower others to greater missional service and ministry;

Someone who identifies and develops potential new leaders.
