The Ethical Investment Advisory Group (EIAG) provides advice on ethical investment matters to the three Church of England National Investing Bodies; the Church Commissioners, Pensions Board, and the church funds managed by CCLA Investment Management. Collectively these manage assets worth around £13bn. The EIAG is the authoritative voice for distinctly Anglican ethical investment policy advice. Its work programme covers a huge variety of ethical investment issues, from traditional subjects such as alcohol and corporate tax, to the ethics of different asset classes or sectors, through to cutting edge technologies such as blockchain.

The Secretary sits at the centre of this, supporting the EIAG’s Chair and members, and coordinating between the EIAG, the NIBs and other stakeholders including Lambeth Palace and the Archbishops’ Council, and is responsible for supporting the development of policy through detailed policy reviews, shorter advisory processes, commissioning research (including theological input) on complex and varied policy issues, and drafting advice reflecting the views of the EIAG. It is a rare opportunity to shape policy and influence thinking.

The Secretary works closely with the NIBs’ ethical and responsible investment teams, and within a support network of other individuals passionate about showing that great investment performance can be delivered while upholding ethical principles.

To be successful in this role you need to have fantastic organisational skills to ensure the EIAG runs successfully, coupled with the ability to develop policies and advice drawing on the expertise of EIAG members and the NIBs. This means you need to be collaborative, a clear communicator and, at times, a diplomat. We’re not expecting you to be an expert in any particular field, but we will want you to share with us your interest in investment, ethics, and environmental, social and governance issues in business.

The role :

  • Enabling the development of distinctly Anglican ethical policy advice for the three NIBs through programmes of work including through detailed policy reviews, shorter advisory processes, commissioning of research for the EIAG (including theological input) on complex and varied policy issues, and drafting advice reflecting the views of the EIAG.
  • Working with the Chair and NIBs to set the annual work-plans for EIAG business, with close liaison and reporting to the relevant NIB trustee committees, and ensuring timely consultation and input into EIAG processes.
  • Maintaining excellent relationships with the NIBs, particularly their ethical investment specialists.
  • Organising and preparing EIAG meetings, including the timely preparation and circulation of agendas, papers and minutes; providing papers to the relevant National Investing Bodies trustee committees; and ensuring that all EIAG papers are of a high quality and take account of NIB requirements/comments.
  • Ensuring the highest standards of governance for the EIAG (including maintaining a register of interests, supporting the work of the EIAG’s Nominations Committee, managing the processes to recruit independent members, and ensuring the best use of resources).
  • Supporting the Chair and members including ensuring appropriate member induction.
  • Preparing the EIAG’s Annual Review and other publications for General Synod and wider dissemination; maintaining the EIAG’s web presence.
  • Drafting responses to Parliamentary and General Synod questions on EIAG matters, and co-ordinating responses across the Members, NIBs and other stakeholders as required.
  • Providing high quality briefing materials to NIB Trustees/CEOs and other stakeholders including the Archbishops.
  • Responsible for acting on behalf of the EIAG, in consultation with its Chair, on matters requiring urgent attention (which may include media and other stakeholder communications).
  • Speaking at events and conferences about the work of the EIAG as agreed with the Communications team and line manager, and in co-ordination with ethical investment leads.
  • Attending and making presentations to the relevant trustee committees of the NIBs as required. Making presentations to Diocesan and other Church bodies on the work of the EIAG.
  • Managing the EIAG budget (c£160k pa) including forecasting, preparing budget papers and ensuring that income and expenditure are properly recorded.
  • Management, as required, of consultants, contractors and project teams supporting the EIAG’s work.
  • Any other duties as set out in the EIAG Terms of Reference or as may reasonably be required by the line manager or Chair of the EAIG.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to present effectively to committee meetings and to large audiences.
  • Strategic thinker and planner, able to grasp and analyse complex issues and to see through their implementation.
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills, able to ensure that work is delivered in a timely way.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent IT skills.


  • Educated to degree level or able to demonstrate skills to an equivalent level (including ability to undertake and present research and conclusions of at least degree-qualified standard).


  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of, and significant interest in, investment, ethical investment and environmental, social and governance issues in business.
  • Experience of policy development and managing programmes of work to produce high quality advice for senior leadership audiences.
  • Awareness of current policy questions for the Church of England and its investing bodies.
  • Experience of successfully planning and administering committee meetings.
  • Experience of writing reports and preparing presentations for different audiences.

  • Naturally collaborative, able to work within and across teams, situations, and levels of an organisation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and liaison skills including a high level of diplomacy skills
  • Comfortable and effective in working in a context where there is limited supervision, competing priorities, interests and views, multiple stakeholders and sometimes tight deadlines.

  • Able to manage effectively manage personal conflicts of interest (for example where EIAG / NIB policy positions may differ from the Secretary’s own beliefs or values).


  • Understanding of the Church of England, its structures, beliefs and values (highly desirable)
  • Understanding of and interest in theology and/or applied ethics
  • Experience of policy development in a complex organisation in the public, private or third sector.
  • Experience of presenting with credibility to senior external stakeholders
  • Experience of undertaking research or policy development in one or more of the policy areas of interest to the EIAG
  • Experience of managing a budget and consultants, contractors, or project teams
  • Experience of investment markets
  • Experience of working successfully with Trustees or non-executive boards
